What is OpenRouter?

What it is

OpenRouter is a unified API gateway that gives developers access to hundreds of models from dozens of providers — OpenAI, Anthropic, Together AI, Fireworks AI, and more — through a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint. It handles provider routing, fallbacks, and cost optimisation across its network.

Who it's for

OpenRouter is well-suited for developers who want to experiment with many different models through one integration, need automatic failover between providers, or want to compare model outputs without managing multiple API keys.

Where CaseDesk differs

CaseDesk deploys a dedicated endpoint in your chosen region. There is no routing layer, no third-party providers in the data path, and no per-token gateway charge on top of provider prices. Your data stays in your region and CaseDesk manages all infrastructure. CaseDesk also includes an OKF knowledge layer — your organisation's documentation and approved policies are built into every endpoint, available to the model at query time. OpenRouter has no equivalent.

Detailed breakdown

Direct endpoint vs routing gateway

OpenRouter adds a routing layer on top of third-party hosted providers. Your request travels through OpenRouter's gateway before reaching whichever provider is selected. This means your data crosses at minimum two external systems. CaseDesk removes both layers — the model runs in your dedicated endpoint and requests go directly to it from your application.

Cost model

OpenRouter charges a routing margin on top of provider prices. At production scale, you pay OpenRouter's margin plus the provider's own margin. CaseDesk uses flat subscription pricing — no gateway margin, no per-token accumulation. For teams with steady daily usage, a flat subscription is consistently more cost-effective.

Data privacy and multi-hop data path

With OpenRouter, your prompts pass through OpenRouter's routing infrastructure and the infrastructure of whichever provider handles the request — potentially Together AI, Fireworks AI, or another. For teams with GDPR obligations, UK data residency requirements, or internal policies against sending data to multiple external APIs, this multi-hop path is a hard blocker. CaseDesk's endpoint is regional and direct.

No vendor lock-in

OpenRouter's model IDs use a provider/model naming scheme specific to OpenRouter. CaseDesk exposes standard OpenAI, Anthropic, and Gemini-compatible endpoints — your application code is fully portable to any compatible provider.
